Come learn more about the 60’s Scoop. It is a partof Canada’s History and the life story of some cli-ents we may work with. Our presenter Lisa Wilder is a counsellor and has a lived experience. She will share facts with us and some of her own story. Here is a tidbit of what we will learn.
On the hinds of the residential school system came the 60s Scoop; the large scale “scooping” of Indigenous children from their families and communities from the mid 1950’ to the late 1980’s. At this time the government felt that it would be more cost effective to take these children from their families and place them into predominantly non-Indigenous, middle class families, rather than putting time, money and efforts into parental supports for Indigenous parents who were still suffering from the effects of their experience in those residential schools. Although each experience was different, what was common was the lasting psychological ill effects of this upheaval on the children who were scooped, the families that they were scooped from and the families they were adopted into.
